POPULAR local restaurant Prashad is set to feature in the Hairy Bikers' new BBC TV cooking show.

The vegetarian Indian restaurant, which began in Bradford 30 years ago, moved to its current home in Drighlington in 2012.

Run by husband-and-wife team Bobby and Minal Patel, the restaurant received a visit from TV chefs Si King and Dave Myers, filmed as part of the duo’s Go Local series.

In the eight-episode series, which airs on BBC Two, the pair visit the Bikers' pick for the top restaurant of each region, as they play matchmaker with innovative local suppliers.

In describing the Prashad episode, the BBC's guide details how Bobby and Minal have "built up a loyal customer base, winning a host of awards along the way". It also details how they have their eyes on a bigger prize - a coveted Michelin star.

The Hairy Bikers source mushrooms, rhubarbs and beetroots for Prashad, to make garlic mushroom pakoras, beetroot-stuffed paratha and rhubarb, rose and cardamom kulfi.

“We were so excited to be chosen to represent Yorkshire,” said Bobby, who co-owns Prashad alongside his wife, Prashad head chef, Minal.

“Being able to share our Gujarati food with people is such a gift, and to have it recognised again, by two chefs we really admire, is a testament to the hard work of Minal and the team."

The food at Prashad tells the story of the Patel family’s lives from India to West Yorkshire, with Gujarati recipes handed down through the family, made with top Yorkshire produce.

“It was an honour to serve up my tasting menu for Si and Dave,” said Minal.

“You’ll have to watch the show to see their full verdict, but the whole team left with full tummies and huge smiles, which is the experience we want everyone to have at Prashad.”

The episode featuring Prashad will be screened on January 11, at 8pm.

On the journey to attaining a Michelin star, Minal added: “Michelin Stars are the pinnacle of success for a chef. We’ve been featured in the Michelin Guide and awarded a Bib Gourmand every year since 2014, where Michelin inspectors recognise top-quality food with great value for money.

“We’re one of only two restaurants in Yorkshire to be awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2023, and there are less than 100 restaurants in the UK that hold the prestigious title.

“A star would be the next step up for us, and it’s something we’re always working towards, fusing the latest fine-dining techniques with our Gujarati heritage.”

The restaurant, which began life on Bradford’s Horton Grange Road, recently celebrated 30 years in business.

Prashad shot to fame when it was runner-up in Gordon Ramsay’s 2010 television programme Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.
