There has been a huge police presence on a residential street after a male died in a serious incident.

West Yorkshire Police was called to an address on Kenmore Road, Cleckheaton, shortly before 5.05am today (Friday, December 23).

It followed reports that a car had collided with a fence and come to a stop in the garden of a house.

Upon attending, officers found a male with serious head injuries lying on the floor nearby.

The male was taken to hospital by ambulance but died before arriving.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened.

One woman described the moment she first noticed the police scene.

She said: "It was when I came back, I went out to work this morning at about 4.35pm so it was just before it happened. It wasn't until I came back at 6.50am.

"They've certainly done from top to bottom, so no cars allowed out at all.”

Describing the area, she said: "It's lovely. We've lived here 19 years. I've brought five children up."

In a message to the man's family, she said: "All my condolences."

Some residents reported hearing a police helicopter at around 5am.

One described the area as very quiet and added: "We don't have anything like this."

Another said: "That is so sad, a young man's lost his life."

Councillor John Lawson (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton) said the incident will come as a “great shock” to those living on the street.

Cllr Lawson said: "The area around Kenmore Road is a quiet residential area and tight-knit community where everybody knows each other.

"It will come as a great shock to them all.

"I don't want to speculate on an ongoing investigation but it's very sad somebody's lost their life early this morning especially at this time of year.

"It's a shock for police to attend, for the ambulance service to attend and to the community. I'd encourage anybody who has any information to get in touch with the police."
