THE COST of living crisis is running so deep that NHS staff in Bradford are being forced to rely on foodbanks, it has been claimed.

Abdul Satar, one of the founders of Bradford Community Kitchen, said it is “no longer just people on benefits” who are using foodbanks, but people in full-time employment too.

Abdul said the community kitchen has seen a surge in demand, and that the cold weather is making things even harder.

“We’ve been helping the homeless with hot meals since 2015, we’ve always been busy, but now there are huge queues outside,” he said.

“NHS staff are coming to us. University students are too.

“A lot more South Asian people are coming. Us Asian people have always been very proud and would never ask for food, but times are changing.

“Everyone is affected. There’s a dire need.”

Abdul shared the story of one trainee nurse who has been using Bradford Community Kitchen for support.

“She’s on minimum wage and just can’t afford anything,” he said.

“The NHS has opened a foodbank for its staff, but she said a lot don’t go, because everyone knows everyone, and they’re embarrassed."

He spoke of an elderly gentleman who was struggling with his mental health and who has been befriended by the community kitchen.

“But his benefits have stopped, he has no electric, no gas, nothing," said Abdul.

“His microwave broke, and he couldn’t afford a new one. We went out and bought him one yesterday.

“Energy costs are rising and people have to either eat or heat their home, it’s a catch-22 – they’re stuck either way.”

Abdul called on the Government to do more to support those in need.

“The help people are getting isn’t enough,” he said.

“They have the £66 a month which goes back into your account, but there’s still a massive way to go after that.

“There needs to be more support for struggling families.”

On Friday, from 6pm to 8pm, Bradford Community Kitchen will offer food and warm drinks to people in need at Campbell House on Sunbridge Road.

The event, sponsored by Regal Foods, is open to anyone who needs support.

“We’ll also be handing out scarves and hats and offer people a safe, warm space,” said Abdul.

Bradford Community Kitchen is open seven days a week.
