A VW Golf driver has been locked up after crashing at 100mph during a ‘horrific’ police pursuit in central Bradford.

Khursand Zamir lost control of the car, span into metal gates and flipped it following a chase in which he reached 115mph on Manningham Lane, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

The police officers following him were shocked to see him crawl out of the wreckage with just a few minor cuts, prosecutor Ella Embleton said.

Zamir, 20, of Alexandra Street, Great Horton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified and unlicensed at 1.15am on August 20.

He was sent to a young offender institution for 14 months by Deputy Circuit Judge Timothy Clayson who told him: “Frankly, this was horrific driving as you yourself acknowledge.”

Miss Embleton told the court that police officers in a marked patrol car spotted the Golf on Toller Lane being driven with no number plate.

It sped off and when they activated their sirens and blue lights, Zamir forced his way through a narrow gap between parked vehicles and drove down Lilycroft Road on the wrong side of the carriageway.

He went 80mph in a 30 zone on Oak Lane and reached speeds of 115mph on Manningham Lane.

Zamir then overtook an HGV at 100mph before crashing the car.

Footage of the three-minute pursuit was played in court and pictures of the smashed up blue Golf were also viewed.

Miss Embleton said that Zamir was ‘incredibly lucky’ to escape with minor injuries.

He had three previous convictions for five offences, including failing to give his name after an accident, careless driving and driving while banned and uninsured.

His barrister, Ken Green, said he panicked when he saw the police car and made the mistake of trying to escape.

He was shocked by the accident and very fortunate indeed not to injure or kill himself; and extremely lucky that no one else was hurt. But it was a short-lived pursuit at a time when traffic was light.

Zamir was a carer for his ill mother and if he was sent to custody, it would impact on her, Mr Green said.

But Judge Clayson said Zamir had travelled on the wrong side of the road and gone at grossly excessive speeds, including doing 115mph in a 30 zone.

He had overturned the car while overtaking a lorry on a bend at 100mph.

Zamir was banned from driving for two and a half years following his release from custody.
