A COUPLE who have supported 40 families over four decades have been recognised for their dedication.

Shared Lives is a caring arrangement enabling more than 10,000 people with a learning or physical disability, mental ill health, dementia or other ongoing social care need, to share their carer's home and family life.

Earlier this year, a prestigious awards ceremony was held where nominations were made by Shared Lives member across the UK.

Linda and Jeff Manley from Bradford were nominated for the Shared Lives Plus Lifetime Achievement Award and were delighted when they won the award.

The couple have both been a source of support in the local community and have been instrumental in making progress for people with a learning disability. Linda and Jeff have provided support to and shared their lives with over 40 families in the last 43 years.

As a special thank you, Linda and Jeff were invited by the Lord Mayor of Bradford for afternoon tea where they talked about the work they have undertaken over years.

Councillor Martin Love, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, said: “Shared Lives provides a valuable network of support for those that need it, whether it’s respite care over a weekend or longer term support. It transforms the lives of many people to be able to do the things they want to with people they have chosen. I congratulate Linda and Jeff on the award and wish them all the best for the future. Meeting them today and listening to their story of 43 years dedication to others was a truly humbling experience”.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “Linda and Jeff have been dedicated Shared lives carers for the past four decades.

“They have always put the needs of the service users at the heart of their care and are really deserving of the Lifetime Achievement award and I wish them all the best in their retirement.”

Shared Lives carers are assessed and approved by the local Shared Lives scheme, operated by Bradford Council to open up their own homes and lives to people who want social care support in the community, and are paid for their commitment.

The service offers short breaks and full time placements in the home of approved Shared Lives carers in the community, which can be anything from an overnight stay to a weekend or a couple of weeks, depending on the needs of the person and their permanent carers.
