A LIGHT show will illuminate a district town’s landmark as part of its Christmas lights switch-on event this weekend.

There will be an afternoon of festive fun from 1pm until 5pm around Shipley's market square ahead of the big moment.

The event will see the town’s festive lights switched on at 4.45pm, followed immediately by a 10 to 15-minute-long light show which will be superimposed onto the town’s clock tower.

This switch-on will feature a host of entertainment in the market square.

A performance of Beauty and the Beast, staged by Q20 Events, will take place at 4pm.

Families can visit Father Christmas at his grotto between 10.30am and 3.45pm at the Kirkgate Centre in Shipley, priced £3 per child. A festive drop-in workshop will be held at Shipley Library.

Based on the story of the Cottingley Fairies, Cecil Green Arts will present walkabout entertainment, the ‘Festive Fairies’.

Mike Connors, Shipley Town Council chairman, who is turning the town’s Christmas lights on, said: “The lights will be superimposed onto the clock tower.

“It’s a bigger event than we have been able to do over the last three years.

“The market will be filled with store holders. We’re expecting a good turnout from families. There will be lots of music and arts events.”
