POLICE have provided an update on a man who was in a "critical condition" after being pulled from a canal.

The man, believed to be homeless, was found in the canal in Skipton last Friday evening and was rushed to hospital.

He entered the water body near Gallows Bridge, at the back of the bus station car park, just before 10pm on November 18.

Three teenagers from the district were arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further inquiries.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The victim's condition has improved and he is likely to make a full recovery. The three teenagers remain on bail."

The force said it was stepping up its police presence in the area.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Fox said: “We are aware of concerns about antisocial behaviour in this part of Skipton and the public will have seen a significantly increased police presence in that area in the last two days.

"North Yorkshire Police are working to address these wider issues and increased policing activity will continue in the coming days.

Anyone with information surrounding the canal incident is asked to contact the police on 101 with reference number: 12220205200.
