FRAUD experts from West Yorkshire Police are offering tips to help ensure that people avoid dodgy deals and scams this Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit will be at shopping centres across the region tomorrow (Wednesday) to offer their advice.

Black Friday (November 25) and Cyber Monday (November 28) are popular dates for people to get the ball rolling with their Christmas shopping - with many traders offering special offers and discounts.

But at this time of year, people are more at risk from being the victim of fraud, particularly online shopping fraud, police said.

Detective Inspector James Humphreys, of the Economic Crime Unit, said: “The variety of methods used by fraudsters to attract and deceive individuals is significant and includes cold telephone calls, fake payment email confirmations and false online stores advertised in social media.

“Our team will be on hand at shopping centres across the county where we have stalls providing information packs relating to many types of fraud - not just online shopping.”

The team will be at The Broadway shopping centre in Bradford between 11am and 3pm tomorrow (Wednesday) as well as at the following locations:

  • White Rose Shopping Centre – Leeds
  • Trinity Shopping Centre – Leeds
  • Kirkgate Shopping Centre – Huddersfield
  • Wool Shops – Halifax
  • Trinity Walk – Wakefield
