A NEW STUDY has suggested that over half of workers in Bradford have a green commute to work.

The research ranked Bradford as third in the country for the areas with the most sustainable commuters, making it the highest-ranked northern city in the UK.

The study – carried out by cycling brand Raleigh – ranked cities by a ‘green score’, based on their median commuting times, percentage of sustainable commutes and percentage of carbon emissions from transport.

It found that 51.6 per cent of Bradford’s working population commute via public transport or another form of low-carbon travel, such as cycling.

Bradford has one of the lowest amounts of carbon emissions from transport, with only 27.4 per cent of the city's Co2 coming from vehicles, the study added.

Bradford was only beaten by Brighton and Oxford.

Liverpool came fourth, followed by Hull in fifth, while Cambridge, Leicester, Newcastle, Exeter and Norwich completed the top ten.

Lee Kidger, Managing Director at Raleigh, said: “As more cities introduce low emissions zones and the country moves towards electric vehicles, electric bikes will become a more popular travel option to get to the office.

“But it’s also clear that our cities still have a way to go to cut their city’s emissions from roads and transport with about a third of a city’s carbon emissions coming from this alone.

“Luckily, we see commuters are making efforts, where they can, to find better options.”
