A 35-year-old man died following the incident on Mayo Avenue, near its junction with Manchester Road.

The man was driving a silver Kia Sorento SUV which had been travelling up Manchester Road away from the city centre at the time of the collision and failed to negotiate a left turn onto Mayo Avenue, police said.

Police were called to the scene at 3.38am and a cordon was put in place. A closure remains and there is congestion to Rooley Lane.

Councillor Ralph Berry, of the Wibsey ward, described the incident as a tragedy.

"It's absolutely terrible," he said.

"It's tragic that someone has lost their life on the roads.

"We need to get proper reports of what happened here, in the small hours of the morning, before we speculate.

"We will be looking to get reports from police and highway engineers on that.

"My thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by the loss of a loved one this morning."

Cllr David Green, also of the Wibsey ward, expressed similar views.

“We need to get further details from the police to identify the cause of the crash and see if any steps need to be taken to ensure that any road safety issues can be addressed,” he said.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the person who has lost their life.”

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, also told the Telegraph & Argus: “We don’t know the ins and outs, but either way, it’s horrible.

“It’s shocking. There are loads of incidents like this happening in Bradford and it’s really sad to see. It’s horrible.

“Our thoughts go out to the person who has died and their family.”
