A TOP comedian has paid a visit to the Bradford district as part of her new TV series.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out sees the star travelling across the UK in her campervan she has called Helen.

In this week’s episode, broadcast on Friday, she takes to the roads of the Yorkshire Moors and Dales including stops at locations in the district. She starts the show by saying; “I love Yorkshire. Full stop.”

Susan begins in Whitby before travelling to Oakworth Station. Here she is inspired by the original 1970 classic, ‘The Railway Children’, which was filmed at the station.

Susan meets volunteer station master Richard Ashworth, helping him to close the Oakworth Station level crossing to traffic while a steam train passes through.

She is thrilled to see the train go through the station, saying: “There is something about a steam train that is very exciting.”

She then parks up her campervan Helen in Skipton and takes to the water on a barge.

Next on her trip to the district is a stop at the ruin of Bolton Abbey, which Susan dubs ‘glorious’ and where she risks being stranded on the stepping stones on the River Wharfe.

She then enjoys a lavender-inspired picnic at Bolton Abbey featuring a tea cake.

Susan’s trip to God’s Own County also includes a stop-off at Shibden Hall in Halifax, where she discovers the historic home of 19th century trailblazer Anne Lister, whose diaries inspired the BBC drama series ‘Gentleman Jack’, which was partly filmed in the Bradford district including Saltaire.

Another West Yorkshire spot she visits is Wakefield, which is the centre of Yorkshire’s neon business, once one of the largest in Europe. Susan is invited to make a special sign for Helen and then sees the neon lights in another setting as she takes to a roller rink to channel 9880s classic film, Xanadu.

The comedian also stops off in Robin Hood’s Bay and a lavender farm during her visit to Yorkshire.

At the end of the episode, Susan says: “I have been to Yorkshire loads of times but I’ve not had my fill yet. I’ll be back Yorkshire, I’ll be back.”

Susan is not the first Channel 5 presenter to visit the Bradford district for a series.

Jane McDonald: My Yorkshire also featured a visit to Oakworth Station and Haworth, which was broadcast earlier this year.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out will be broadcast on Channel 5 on Friday, November 18 at 8pm.
