A BRADFORD doctor has urged the new Health Secretary to ‘take control’ as the NHS reaches ‘breaking point’.

Dr Amir Khan reacted to NHS England data which showed the number of people in England waiting to start hospital treatment rose to 7.1 million at the end of September, up from seven million in August and the highest figure since records began in August 2007.

In A&E departments, the number of people waiting more than 12 hours from a decision to admit them to actually getting a bed reached a new record high.

He called on Health Secretary Steve Barclay to tackle the problems in the crisis.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Dr Amir said: “The NHS is reaching some grim milestones.

“Al sorts of things going on causing increased demand on NHS. We are seeing the NHS at breaking point. We have increased demand.

“It is a global problem within the NHS and the people that suffer the most are the patients.

“We need to have conversations with the new health secretary Steve Barclay about what is going to be done to tackle the staffing crisis and waiting times. At the moment we don’t have the answers.

“We need Steve Barclay to take control of this now.”
