PLANS to build two workshops on a “somewhat bizarre” Bradford street have been refused.

The application calls for two workshop units to be built on the corner of Independent Street and Centre Street, off Little Horton Lane.

The land is covered with damaged and scrap cars, and is currently surrounded by workshops and a row of terraced houses.

The application, by Mohammed Tariq, described the layout of the street as “somewhat bizarre” and said approval of the plans would lead to the eyesore vehicles being removed.

But planning officers at Bradford Council pointed out that there has never been an application to use the land to store cars, and future enforcement action would likely see the land cleared anyway.

Workshop plans for Leeds Road site are approved

Officers said: “The part of the site which is to be developed is an area of open land that currently appears to be used to store dismantled cars. No formal planning permissions are in place for this.

“The application suggests that these operations will cease should planning permission be granted for this development.

“However, as there are no formal consents in place for the operations currently the landowner may be required to remove vehicles from this site anyway, regardless of the outcome of this application.”

Refusing the plans, officers said: “The significant underdelivery of parking proposed would encourage vehicles to overhang the highway and lead to increased pressures for on-street parking in this area, which is already highly contested. This would exacerbate existing highway and pedestrian safety issues which is unacceptable.”
