FIREFIGHTERS were called to a secondary school this evening after a concerned member of the public believed there was a fire in the building.

Three fire engines were scrambled to Appleton Academy, on Huddersfield Road, Wyke, at around 7.45pm.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said it was a false alarm and it was actually a reflection from a neighbouring bonfire.

A Facebook post from the school, seen by the Telegraph & Argus, says: "We are aware of a social media post that is circulating this evening, which appears to show a fire in the offices at the front of the school site.

"We understand this has caused a lot of concern, and we would like to thank the community for raising this with us.

"However, we would like to reassure you that this is actually a reflection in the school windows of an organised bonfire which is taking place opposite the school site.

"There has not been a fire at the academy.

"The fire service were called to attend school by a concerned member of the public.

"Our site security team have also been to the school this evening and both have given the site the all clear."
