A MOTHER and stepfather who beat and tortured a teenage boy to death have been sentenced to a combined 78 years for offences branded as inhuman.

Agnieszka Kalinowska, 36, and Andrezej Latoszewski, 38, both of Leeds Road, Huddersfield, were sentenced today at Leeds Crown Court for the murder of Sebastian Kalinowski, 15.

The sentencing was welcomed by senior officers at Homicide and Major Enquiry Team who said the couple’s treatment of Sebastian during the short time he was in the UK had been truly wicked.

Andrezej Latoszewski, 38, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 39 years for murder, neglect and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Agnieszka Kalinowska, 36, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 39 years for murder, neglect and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Emergency services were called to their property on Leeds Road on August 13 after Sebastian was found unresponsive.

He was taken to hospital where it was confirmed he had died. Medical examinations revealed the teen, who was small for his age, had suffered 28 fractures to his ribs over a period of time and died of sepsis.

Leeds Crown Court heard that CCTV recovered from the property showed he had been physically abused, and assaulted with weapons including a bed frame slat, wooden spindle, an electric flex and a needle, in a way which would not leave obvious injuries.

The 15-year-old, spoke little English and had only arrived in the UK in October 2020 to live with his mother, and is thought to have lived an isolated life in which he had nowhere and no-one to turn to.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Nicholson of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who led the police investigation, said: “This has been without doubt the most harrowing case I have experienced in my 29 years as police officer.

“Sebastian was a child who could not have been more isolated and appears to have suffered the most appalling abuse in silence, and even come to see it as normal.

“Latoszewski and Kalinowska abused this boy in a manner which was wicked and evil, and we may never know why they chose to act in this inhuman way.

“We recovered overwhelming evidence of their attacks and of them discussing them in phone messages, and I can say that footage we have seen of this abuse has upset experienced detectives.

“The injuries inflicted on poor Sebastian were carried out in a way where they would not be visible, and it is clear both parties acted in a way to hide evidence of their assaults on him.

“They both now will have many years in prison to reflect on why they chose to inflict such pain, suffering, and eventually death, on an innocent boy.”
