POLICE in Kirklees have raised awareness of hate crime after attending a special awareness month event.

The Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team said residents who make reports will always be listened to and supported after attending an Islamophobia Awareness Month event at Huddersfield University.

Inspector Graham Dyson spoke at the event which was attended by delegates including Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, Revd Canon Rachel Firth, the Vicar of Huddersfield, and Abdul Jebar of the Huddersfield Council of Mosques.

West Yorkshire Police recognises the devastating effect being a victim of hate crime can have on individuals and whole communities.

The force campaigns to raise awareness of hate crime and encourages victims to come forward and make their voices heard.

Islamophobia Awareness Month takes place across November and was founded in 2012 to raise awareness of the topic and the contribution Muslim communities make in society.

Inspector Dyson said: “Hate crime affects so many people, and it was a privilege to be able to discuss peoples’ experience of hate incidents, and how this not only affects individual victims, but also family, friends and communities.

“Hate crime can never be tolerated, and West Yorkshire Police will continue to robustly investigate all reports of hate incidents and bring offenders to justice.”
