A MAN who repeatedly flouted a suspended sentence order for dangerous driving by twice getting behind the wheel of a car while disqualified and uninsured has been jailed for seven months.

Zeeshan Hussain, 23, of Upper Woodlands Road, Bradford, was driving illegally just three days after being jailed for four months, suspended for 18 months, for driving dangerously on Oak Lane in Manningham, Bradford, on March 3.

Sending him to prison today, Recorder Mark McKone KC said he had read a very moving letter from Hussain’s mother who is registered blind and relies on his help at home.

He urged Hussain to make her his priority in the future instead of committing driving offences.

Prosecutor Paul Canfield told Bradford Crown Court that Hussain was caught by the police on July 24 driving a Volkswagen Polo on Durham Road in Bradford at 10.30am, three days after receiving the suspended sentence. He was also disqualified and uninsured.

He abandoned the car and ran off but was detained, On August 6, Hussain was again driving in Bradford, this time in a Toyota Yaris on High Bank Lane. He was again uninsured and a banned driver.

He got out of the vehicle and was walking away from it when the police arrived to arrest him.

Hussain pleaded guilty to breach of the suspended sentence order and to twice driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

Robin Frieze, his barrister, conceded that they were flagrant breaches of court orders but Hussain had now been remanded in custody in HMP Leeds for a month. He had found it a very unpleasant experience and had learned a very hard lesson.

He was lightly convicted and there were very stressful and tragic family circumstances in place at the time he was committing the offences, Mr Frieze said, although Hussain did not offer those as an excuse for his behaviour. He knew he shouldn’t have been driving.

Mr Frieze urged the court to give Hussain one more chance now that he knew what life behind bars was like.

Recorder McKone said Hussain had been very fortunate to get such a short suspended sentence for dangerous driving.

Only three days later, he was caught driving and he did it again soon afterwards.

Hussain was sentenced to four months imprisonment, with three months of the suspended sentence activated on top of that, making seven months in all.

He was banned from driving for 14 months.
