A SCHEME to rebuild a home that was destroyed by fire in 2020 has been approved.

Members of Bradford Council’s Keighley and Shipley area planning panel went against the advice of planning officers and granted planning permission for a major extension to 12 View Road, Keighley.

The property was gutted by fire in October 2020, and the building has remained derelict ever since.

A planning application was submitted by a Mr Riaz earlier this year to bring the property back into use – but making it much bigger than the original house.

There would be a three storey extension to the rear, and a large, three storey glazed atrium built at the front.

Planning officers had recommended the plans be refused, saying the development would “dominate the original house and the neighbouring properties and would not complement the design of the original property and the wider area.”

But members pointed out that the street had numerous different house designs. Councillor Doreen Lee (Lab, Keighley East) said: “That end of the road has a lot of different house types on it. I really like this design.”

Councillor Mohammed Nazam (Cons, Keighley Central) said: “At the moment this house is a complete eyesore.”

Some Councillors suggested that extra trees could be planted in front of the property to “hide” the new design.

But Councillor Mohammed Amran (Lab, Heaton) said: “I don’t agree with that. When you have a house like this you want to show what a Grand Design it is.”

Four members of the panel voted to approve the plans and two voted against.
