The finalists for the Good Neighbour award have been nominated for their kindness and never-ending support to others.

The award celebrates people that go above and beyond to do the neighbourly thing in their local community.

The award was created to recognise residents who step forward when they find their neighbours are facing difficulties or just need some odd jobs tackling.

The finalists are Abad Hussain and Sarah Hinton.

Abad Hussain was nominated by his 76-year-old neighbour, Ray.

Describing Abad’s nature, his nominator said: “Kindness, helpfulness and concern for others. Always willing to help me and always there for me. A very reassuring presence next door to me. A wonderful neighbour.

“Due to my health he has been running me around at my beck and call, he does my shopping and also takes me shopping, he posts my letters, picks up my prescriptions, and drops them off.

“He checks on me regularly and I know that I only have to ring and he will be there. This is all in addition to having his own family to care for.

“I have been very unwell.

“I was admitted and he kept in touch with me and came to see me and brought me the T&A.

“He has young children yet always fits me in to his busy schedule.”

Abad, who lives in Girlington, said: “He’s family, he’s always been there, ever since we were kids.

“Sometimes it’s just going round, sitting down, having a chat and helping him clear his mind.

“I’m there for him to talk to.”

Sarah Hinton, who founded Shine in West Bowling over 10 years ago, was described as a “pillar of the community”.

Sarah’s work includes helping the city’s most deprived and vulnerable residents, running fun events and activities for children and adults, and holding a regular food bank.

Her nominee said: “Sarah Hinton is a good pillar of the community, inspires others, help deprived people and vulnerable.

“Sarah [is] always encouraging people to volunteer in many helpful roles which is a good step for community people.”

Sarah said: “I feel slightly amazed but privileged to be in my position. Very honoured and privileged that somebody’s put me forward.”

Shine has been a growing community hub based at St Stephen’s Church for more than half a decade.

It supports more than 200 men, women and children every single week.
