“DOGS will literally drag their owners into my shop as they know this is where all the best treats and toys are.”

Four-legged customers are among the regulars at Farsley DIY and Pet Supplies, our T&A Trader of the Week.

Owner Mark Cox tells how dogs make a beeline for the shop, which has been on the village’s Main Street for almost half a century.

“It is a great location with regular and passing trade,” he says. “Many customers have been coming to the shop for years, with different generations of families visiting us.”

The shop was previously called Woodpickers. “Some customers, who have been coming for a long time, still call it Woodpickers,” says Mark.

Pet Supplies was added to the name more recently as a range of animal products were introduced.

“Paint brushes, screws, fillers, light bulbs and hay for the family rabbit are among the most popular items we sell,” says Mark.

At certain times of year or as the seasons change the shop can become busier. “When seeds arrive in spring we get an influx of people, then in summer people come in for fence paint. As we go into autumn, we get people coming in for fireworks, and if the snow settles in winter. people come in to buy sledges.”

Staff can offer guidance to anyone who may need it. “If someone asks for glue I might recommend the right one for the job, and if asked for a lightbulb I may demonstrate a suitable one,” says Mark.

Their pet food and supplies caters for animals from hamsters to dogs, and bedding produced specifically for tortoises

More recently the shop has been stocking Airfix model kits along with the Timberkits. “We sell things people have to make, which will hopefully encourage the younger generation, and even the older ones amongst us, away from their screens,” says Mark.

The shop also cuts keys and is a drop off point for shoe repairs.

The customers are “a great bunch,” he says. “They make owning the shop a pleasure, they know the value of their high street and to keep supporting their local shops and venues, all of which help keep Farsley alive and kicking.”

There is a great community atmosphere in Farsley, with shops playing their part in community celebrations and events, says Mark.
