THREE hairdressing friends are banding together to raise awareness for a cause close to their hearts.

Chloe Streets, Hannah Wardman and Chris Alexander, of Wardman Alexander Hairdressing in Thornton, are fundraising for MS UK, a charity that supports people affected by multiple sclerosis.

Both Chloe, 29, and Hannah, 33, have been personally affected by MS, a disease of the central nervous system that can have a huge and debilitating impact on the lives of those diagnosed with it.

Chloe’s mum suffered from MS and tragically took her own life, while Hannah’s dad, Neil, was diagnosed 17 years ago.

Now 29, Chloe, from Wibsey, was in secondary school when her mum Nicola was diagnosed with MS.

She said: “She was a really, really good hairdresser, super busy, it just hit her so hard.”

Following relapse after relapse, Nicola sold her business and retired early.

“My stepdad had to work part-time to be around because she was quite poorly, she struggled with walking, her speech, and things like that.”

In November 2014, Chloe’s stepdad Graham tragically died from a heart attack.

The following January, Nicola took her own life at the age of 44 as her struggles with MS worsened.

“It was just too much for my mum,” Chloe said. She suffered with her own mental health in the years following her loss but is now determined to ensure other people with MS get the support they need.

Chloe said: “I think it’s a massive thing, people feel so lonely.

“When my mum first got MS, I didn’t really know anything about it. You don’t know at 13/14, you just think ‘my mum’s poorly’.

“It must have been really hard, I just wish there would have been more support for her.”

Chloe was spurred on to run the London Marathon for MS UK and completed the gruelling challenge earlier this month in under four hours and is also doing an ultramarathon.

She’s raised around £2,000 and would like to bump that up even more.

Now the salon is coming together for a special fundraising event at the salon, which is on Thornton Road.

It will be held on November 13 from 2pm, with entry of £2 per person. All proceeds will go to MS UK and there’ll be lots to enjoy, including prosecco on arrival, amazing raffle prizes, local businesses selling their goods and more.
