A BMW driver who almost collided with a police car on a roundabout has been banned from driving after admitting being over the alcohol limit.

Police on the A59 near Skipton at around 11.15pm on May 3 noticed Umsman Mahmood, 23, because the vehicle he was driving was weaving about the road and going at an inconsistent speed.

The police illuminated the blue light on their vehicle and Mahmood swerved across a roundabout nearly colliding with the officers, heard Skipton Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was taken to the police station where a blood sample later revealed he had 106 milligrammes in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

Mahmood, who admitted drink driving at Broughton on May 3, had a conviction for drugs driving in August this year, the court heard.

In mitigation, Ruth Weir said Mahmood had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. She said he had been drinking earlier in the day and accepted his driving at the time had been poor.

Mahmood, of Neath Close, Blackburn, was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £34. If he completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course, his ban will be reduced by 18 weeks.
