LOCAL charities have the chance to take a share of an amazing £128,000 cash giveaway.

The Gannett Foundation – the charitable arm of the Telegraph & Argus’ parent company – is providing £128,000 in cash to support charities across the country.

The Foundation asked the public to decide where this money should go. People nominated in their thousands and a shortlist of 10 charities in each region will now be in with a shout of sharing in the £16,000 giveaway.

The public can now decide which of the 10 charities in the North East region get the money, with readers cutting out a coupon from the paper – the first one being on Monday – to say who should benefit.

Of the 10 charities on the shortlist in the North East section, two are from Bradford.

They are domestic abuse and sexual violence charity Staying Put and community organisation Queensbury Support Centre.

Staying Put helps people with supported accommodation, providing safe houses for women and their children, and also supports men who have been victims of abuse.

A Staying Put spokesperson said: “Staying Put really cares for people and wants to help everyone feel safe from abuse.

“Some people are able to remain in their homes if safe to do so, and if the abuser has been removed. Staying Put can make their home safer by changing locks, installing panic alarms and providing money for damage to property, like doors and windows where the abuser might have tried to gain access.

“The charity is currently looking for money for a sensory room and sensory equipment for the safe houses so that children can recover from the trauma.

“Staying Put can also uses money for trips and activities, which bring happiness to the lives of the children and adults who leave everything behind just to be safe.”

Queensbury Support Centre provides support to elderly people, helping to tackle loneliness and social isolation.

Based at the Baptist Chapel on Chapel Lane, the Centre allows people to make friends and participate in activities.

A spokesperson from the organisation said: “Queensbury Support Centre helps to maintain the mental well-being of elderly people in the local area.

“Having had our core funding cut, and due to the effects of the pandemic, we struggle to maintain our basic operations, but we would love to be able to give those little extras – like a trip out to a fish shop or to a local park to feed the ducks.”
