A BRADFORD business has come up with a unique idea to tackle the problem of fly-tipping blighting the community of Holme Wood in Bradford.

BN Skips, based in West Bowling, is looking to place one or two skips in Holme Wood to deter people from fly-tipping.

A spokesperson for BN Skips said: "We're a family-run skip hire business and we want to give something back to the community in which we grew up, the Holme Wood estate in Bradford.

"We're aware that fly-tipping is a massive problem in Holme Wood and we know it's a concern for the residents.

"We want to place one or two skips a month for six months in a designated area of the estate to allow all residents to get rid of their waste and household rubbish instead of it being littered and making the area an eyesore.

"Incommunities Housing Association would need to give us a designated area to place the skips."

Jessica Harrison, from BN Skips, said: "Fly-tipping is really bad. Rubbish is on every corner and half the time it takes weeks to clean up.

"We can get it picked up and disposed of once the skip's full."

Zoe Trennerry, from BN Skips, said: "There is a lot of fly-tipping around Holme Wood. Older and younger residents get sick of it.

"We'll start with one skip, but if it's a success we could put two down.

"A lot of people in Holme Wood take pride in their gardens but they can't afford to pay for a skip. This is where we come in to help the community."

A spokesperson for Incommunities said: "Although we have had no direct communication regarding this offer, we would be very interested in discussing ideas and help which may be available from BN Skips.

"The issue of fly-tipping in Holme Wood is a serious and costly problem for the local community, landlords and Bradford Council and we would welcome any assistance in tackling this.

"Our experience of leaving skips on an estate for this type of use is that it is very difficult to manage and overflowing waste can become an issue.

"We would therefore welcome a discussion with the company to explore a planned approach and joint working to see how this could work."

A Bradford Council spokesperson added: “This is a very generous proposal from BN Skips and it’s great to hear that a local business wants to do something to address an ongoing issue for our district.

“We will need to give this very careful consideration and have some discussions with the business to agree on how this could work.”
