A DRUGGED-UP driver who sped off from the police while 15 times over the limit for cocaine has been jailed for 12 months.

Abdul Ali was ordered to stop while at the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf on South Street, Keighley, in the early hours of October 30 last year.

Ali, 36, of Prospect Drive, Keighley, accelerated off at 3.15am and led officers in a marked patrol car on a three-minute circular chase on streets including Queen’s Road, Goulbourne Street, Oakworth Road and Hird Street.

Prosecutor Philip Adams said the pursuit went down narrow residential streets with vehicles parked on either side. Ali mounted the kerb at one point before pulling up and running off. He was chased and detained, receiving a dislocated elbow in the process.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and found to be driving under the influence of cannabis and cocaine. He was also 15 times the limit for Benzoylecgonine (BZE) a cocaine breakdown product.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while over the limit for three drugs.

Stephen Greatley-Hirsch said in mitigation that Ali had not taken the drugs that day and did not expect to be still under the influence of them.

The pursuit did not cause any collision, damage or injury. It wasn’t the worst offence of dangerous driving but it was reckless and stupid, he conceded.

Ali was going through a turbulent time, with domestic and financial problems, and had learned his lesson.

His arm was still in a sling after his elbow was dislocated when he was apprehended while running away from the police. It made him unable to work, the court heard.

Judge Jonathan Rose said Ali was on bail for allegedly driving over the prescribed limit when he committed the offence of dangerous driving after taking the three drugs.

The pursuit was down narrow residential streets with cars parked on both sides.

“When the blue lights of a police car come on, you stop; if you don’t you will go to prison,” the judge warned.

There was significant risk to the police officers having to follow Ali along narrow streets, across junctions and taking sharp bends.

He knew he had taken cocaine and cannabis and he was 15 times the limit for BZE.

Ali was banned from driving for two years and until he passes an extended test.

Judge Rose ordered the deprivation of the car used in the offence.
