A DRUNKEN man set about five police officers, punching, spitting and biting them, after he was arrested for wounding a woman with a glass, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Jamie Knight was provoked when his former neighbour poured her drink over his head in a pub. He threw his back at her and followed it with the glass that caused lacerations to her face, prosecutor Jeremy Hill-Baker said.

The court was told that Knight, his father and the victim had got on well but there was a fall-out and antagonism between the parties.

Knight, 27, formerly of Bonwick Mall, Buttershaw, Bradford, but remanded in HMP Leeds since November, became aggressive in the custody suite at the police station after he was apprehended for the assault at 10pm.

He punched an officer, spat at two more, threw a cup of water at a fourth and bit a female officer on the leg.

Knight pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding the woman at The Last Post public house in Ripponden on November 19 last year and to assaulting five police officers acting in their function as emergency workers after they went to his address to arrest him.

Mr Hill-Baker said the woman suffered cuts to her face in the incident. They had bled heavily and left her feeling worried about going out.

Knight told the police he was provoked. He was drunk and had taken cannabis that night.

His barrister, Sukhdev Garcha, said in mitigation that Knight had ongoing and complex mental health issues.

He had no previous convictions and had been remanded in prison for 11 months be-cause it had been impossible to find him suitable accommodation.

Mr Garcha said he had served almost the equivalent of a two-year jail sentence.

The incident in the pub began when the woman, who had also been drinking, poured the contents of her glass over Knight, so there was provocation.

He had retaliated by throwing his drink at her and then his glass. It may have smashed when it hit a wall and fragments struck her in the face.

Knight would be supported in suitable accommodation on his release from custody.

Judge Jonathan Gibson sentenced him to a community order for two years with up to 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He made a three-year restraining order banning him from having any contact with the woman.

He told him that he would be released from prison immediately.
