A Bradford City fan who entered the pitch during a Barrow AFC match has been sentenced.

Callum Walker was attending the Barrow vs Bradford City match at Holker Street when he came onto the pitch.

The 21-year-old was convicted of going onto a playing area at a football match when he appeared before South Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

Court documents said the defendant went onto the playing area 'without lawful excuse' at Holker Street on August 6.

The fan was due to stand trial having denied the offence but changed his plea.

He was due to claim he had been pushed onto the pitch by others fans.

The West Yorkshire club scored a late equaliser when the two teams met, only for Barrow to score another goal shortly after to win the game.

Walker, of Avondale Road in Shipley, Bradford, was fined £160 by magistrates after the court took his guilty plea into account.

He was also ordered to pay a £64 victim surcharge and £200 in court costs.

Entering the pitch during a football match is illegal and can result in fans being banned from matches.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Under the Football Offences Act 1991 it is an offence for a person at a designated football match to go onto the playing area, or any area adjacent to the playing area to which spectators are not generally admitted, without lawful authority or lawful excuse.

"Any person found to have breached this legislation should expect to be held to account for their actions.

"Potential sentences include, the individual receiving a fine and a football banning order for their offending."

Barrow AFC recently announced a series of measures after a fan threw a firework onto the pitch in the game against Carlisle United.

The club have announced a lifetime stadium ban for the culprit.

They have also closed an area of the ground until further notice, increased the age fans can buy tickets unaccompanied, and said fans can expect searches on the way into the ground.

An arrest was made after the incident in the third minute of the game.
