A BRADFORD MP has said "working families are paying the price for government incompetence" after a poll revealed record numbers of people are skipping meals.

The research – carried out for the Trades Union Congress – shows one in seven (14%) people across the UK are having to skip meals or go without food to make ends meet.

However, figures for Bradford West (18.19%), Bradford East (17.88%) and Bradford South (16.79%) constituencies are higher than this.

The poll also highlighted that people are cutting back on food spending, missing payments on household bills and cutting back on heating, hot water and electricity.

Imran Hussain, MP for Bradford East, said: “After 12 years of failure by this Tory Government and successive Prime Ministers, their mismanagement of our economy and their refusal to take the bold action needed to tackle the rising cost-of-living crisis, working families across Bradford are now paying the price for this Government’s cruelty and their incompetence in office.

“In what is one of the world’s richest countries, no one should have to make a choice between heating or eating, and it is nothing less than shameful that so many people in Bradford East are having to cut back on essentials to make ends meet.

“Instead of policies that further entrench the poverty and deprivation in Bradford that will gut vital public services, we need a new government that will finally deliver the change people in Bradford desperately require to fix this crisis.”
