This year’s Christmas Star Appeal got underway today – with the district’s Lord Mayor dedicating the first star to those who have died from Covid.

Each year, people can dedicate gold stars in memory of family or friends which are placed on the Christmas tree at City Hall in Bradford.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Martin Love, has launched this year’s appeal by dedicating a tribute to those we have lost since the pandemic started in 2020.

The Lord Mayor said: “It's a nice way to remember a loved one, friend or family member.

“I would encourage people to put a star on the tree at City Hall. It is a very simple process to do it.

“My star is dedicated to everyone we have lost from Covid. There are still a lot of people in hospital affected by it.

“It is important we don’t forget those we have lost. It is something that is still with us.”

The annual Christmas Star event is always one of the most poignant dates in the civic calendar and has come to mean a great deal to residents of the district.

This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, December 7, in the Banqueting Suite at City Hall, Bradford, at 5pm for a tea or coffee and a mince pie with The Lord Mayor to see their Christmas Star on the City Hall Christmas Tree.

The annual event sees around 200 tributes dedicated to late family and friends during December which form an important part of the festive appeal.

The annual Christmas Stars Appeal is run in partnership with the Telegraph & Argus.

The stars are £5 each to buy and all the money raised is donated to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which this year is supporting Bradford Hospital’s Charity, ‘Bradford’s BIG Neonatal Appeal’.

People can nominate the person of their choice as a Christmas Star for this year’s appeal by filling out the form provided in Wednesday’s paper.

They have the option to fill in the coupon and send a cheque or postal order for £5, made payable to ‘The Lord Mayor’s Appeal’, to Christmas Star, Lord Mayor’s Appeal, Room 215 City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY.
