Police used stop and search powers after stopping a suspicious vehicle this weekend.

West Yorkshire Police flagged the driver down in Bingley town centre on Saturday night.

Under stop and search, officers checked all five occupants as well as the car.

One small bag of cannabis was discovered and seized.

The update was shared by Sergeant Terri Green, part of the force’s Baildon, Bingley and Bingley Rural beat.

Responding to one member of the public, Sgt Green said: “My tweets are for my local community who want to know that we are out there patrolling their streets where they've asked us to.

“Some will have seen this and want to know the outcome.”

When can police use stop and search powers?

Under current UK laws, three different types of stop and search powers allow police to “allay or confirm” their suspicions without making an arrest.

There is a power which requires officers to have “reasonable grounds” to conduct the search; a power which allows officers to search without reasonable grounds when authorised by a senior officer based on certain pre-conditions; and a power officers can use to search those they ‘reasonably suspect’ are terrorists.
