RESIDENTS have been reminded about the laws on fireworks ahead of Bonfire night.

West Yorkshire Police – Bradford City’s Facebook page outlined the regulations relating to fireworks as the district gears up for bonfire night displays on and around November 5.

The police post says it is an offence for anyone aged under 18 to possess fireworks in a public place.

It is illegal for anyone to possess category 4 fireworks (professional display fireworks) by anyone other than a fireworks professional.

It is illegal to supply fireworks to anyone aged under 18.

It is an offence to throw or cast any firework in or into any highway, street or public space.

People are not allowed to light any fire or discharge any firearm or firework (without lawful authority or excuse) within 50 feet of the centre of a highway.

The police Facebook post added: “It is a common misconception that you can only let fireworks off on or around Guy Fawkes Night.

“You can in fact let fireworks off any time of year and any day of the week including Sundays, but you must let them off before 11pm.”

It states exceptions to the 11pm rule are November 5 when fireworks can be let off until midnight.

On New Year’s Eve and Diwali and the Chinese New Year fireworks can be let off until 1am.

The post states: “The penalties for using fireworks outside the above curfew hours are imprisonment (maximum 6 months) and a substantial fine. Please note, you could also commit offences if they were being used to cause a nuisance.”
