A MAJOR Bradford hotel was the scene of a huge police presence after two men locked themselves in a room and refused to leave.

Guests and passer-byers of the city centre's Midland Hotel, Cheapside, were left shocked as police pounced on Friday lunchtime.

Eight vehicles and police dogs were needed to deal with the emergency at the 90-bedroom three-star Victorian hotel.

Police, who were called to the scene at 12.27pm, say they arrested the men on suspicion of a public order offence.

A guest at the hotel - which is over 100 years old after opening in 1890 - said they witnessed officers use riot shields in the lobby.

They also added that cheers were heard when an arrested man was ushered to the exit.

"I saw police cars and I saw them bringing the guy downstairs," they said.

"There were a lot of police officers with riot shields.

"We cheered when they brought him down as we were waiting to get to our rooms."

When the Telegraph & Argus visited the scene at around 2pm, we spoke to some guests who were staying at The Midland for a line dancing weekend.

A group of ladies spoke of their shock at the large police presence upon their arrival.

They said: "We were greeted by nine police cars.

"We had been told about what was going on.

"It was handled fine, the police kept us all to one side."

A couple of onlookers were also frightened by what they saw on what was just a casual stroll through the city centre.

One person said: "I just saw a lot of police.

"Around here, there's always something going on.

"It's not good, it's scary."

Another added: "It has made me really nervous.

"I don't know what has gone on.

"There are eight police vehicles lined up on Cheapside.

"Officers have brought dogs, tape and loads of equipment."

The Telegraph & Argus did approach The Midland Hotel for a comment but they did not reply in time.
