A HISTORIC library building is in line for new windows as part of a continuing refurbishment programme at the Grade II listed building.

The original Cleckheaton Library building was completed in 1930, with a large extension to the rear added in 1973.

Plans have been lodged to replace the wooden sash windows in the more modern part of the building.

They are said to be in a “dilapidated state and are beyond economical repair”.

Documents accompanying the listed building consent application state that the existing timber framed units would be removed and replaced with aluminium framed equivalents.

“This will ensure that the windows and door can remain in good condition without regular and costly maintenance.

“The windows in the original building are metal framed and it is thought that aluminium framed units will be equally or more in keeping with those in the original building.

“The layout and frame profiles will closely match to the existing arrangement to minimise visual impact.”

It adds: “Currently many of the timber units have sashes which don’t open. This is because they have been painted shut over the years. This has resulted in a lack of ventilation and an increased risk of related damage to the building.

"This has also seen a reduction in comfort levels for customers and staff within the library. The use of aluminium framed units will negate this from happening in future as the frames will have a pre-finished coating and will not require regular decoration to maintain good condition.”

According to the plans submitted to Kirklees Council, a total of 20 windows would be included in the replacement programme.

An amendment to a glazed door on a staff-only corridor is among the proposals, with the bottom panels infilled - floor-to-ceiling glazing is said to not be necessary in this location.

“The proposal will create a more pleasant internal environment and increase building security whilst having a minimal effect on the external appearance,” the report adds.

A spokesman for the Council told the Telegraph & Argus: “Kirklees Libraries play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of our residents and we are committed to maintaining our library infrastructure.

“Cleckheaton Library has received significant investment over the last few years and the works to the windows is a continuation of this programme. We are currently considering the available options and of course will endeavour to keep any disruption to a minimum.”
