A MAN has been charged with causing a public nuisance after he brought the M62 to a standstill last week.

Police negotiators were brought in after the 50-year-old was spotted on the wrong side of bridge railings on the motorway.

The emergency, near Junction 25 at Brighouse, sparked a near-six hour closure of the busy trans-Pennine motorway as work to bring the incident to a safe conclusion continued.

A spokesperson from the force said: "A 50-year-old man has been charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance following an incident on Tuesday, October 4.

"The charges were brought following an investigation into the incident, which caused the M62 motorway to be closed in the Calderdale area and required a large response from the emergency services.

"He has been released on bail to appear at Bradford Magistrates Court next month."

West Yorkshire Police received a report of a concern for safety shortly before 1am on Tuesday, October 4.

Some hours later, a man was brought to safety and the motorway was able to reopen at around 6.45am.

One motorist trying to access the M62 at junction 26 at Chain Bar said: "It was mayhem and very difficult to get anywhere."
