BRADFORD City's final game of the season clashes with King Charles III's coronation next year, throwing the fixture into doubt.

It was announced by The Palace today that the new monarch's coronation will take place on May 6, 2023.

This is also the final day of the League 2 season, when all 24 sides will face off against each other at the same kick-off time of 3pm and there could be a lot to play for.

Bradford City are set to come up against Leyton Orient at The University of Bradford Stadium (Valley Parade) that day.

But there is a chance games across the EFL and EPL could be cancelled to a later date, after a similar procedure was witnessed following Queen Elizabeth II's death.

The FA took the decision to postpone all games - even amateur fixtures - across the country out of respect for Her Majesty's death.

Many games were even stopped the weekend after, such as Manchester United against Leeds United, as police from around the UK were drafted in to manage the Queen's funeral on September 19.

There has been no word from the FA, EFL or EPL as of yet but it brings into question the fixtures at the end of the season, next year, when a similar protocol could be followed.

This could put the stoppers on a promotion or even title party for The Bantams, who are progressing well this season under the stewardship of Mark Hughes.

Bradford City currently sit in sixth, and one of the play-off spots, having put together a four-game unbeaten run in the league.

The coronation could also coincide with one of the most important dates in The Bantams's calendar.

It represents the closest home game to the date 38 years prior to 2023 when 56 fans tragically lost their lives in the Bradford City stadium fire, on May 11, 1985.

This means the fixture would more than likely be chosen as a memorial match for the harrowing events of that day.

Both League 1 and the Championship also have their final fixtures on May 6, meaning Huddersfield Town's home tie versus Reading could be in jeopardy.

The Premier League will still have three weeks to run but fixtures for Round 35 could be postponed, when Leeds United are set for one of their hottest games of the season.

The Elland Road club - who may or may not be embroiled in a relegation battle at that point, or could be safely in midtable mediocrity after a tough start to the season - are due to travel to The Etihad to face Man City, where the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland will be in action.

The latter may not have the opportunity that weekend to face his hometown club for the second time in the 2022/23 season though, if the FA decides to postpone fixtures.

The Palace said the ceremony will be “rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry” but also “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future”.

The coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey, eight months after the monarch’s accession and the death of the Queen, with the Queen Consort being crowned alongside Charles.
