A COUNCILLOR has called for the Government to regulate the sale of fireworks better following an incident at a block of Bradford flats.

Three males were arrested on suspicion of setting off the explosives in Kelvin House, Holme Wood, on Saturday.

It comes less than a month away from Bonfire Night - notoriously a difficult night for all our emergency services.

Tong Ward Councillor Matt Edwards (Green) feels the police do a brilliant job dealing with fireworks, despite desperately needing more Government support.

He said: "Like many places in Bradford - and across the country - we have seen an increase in firework-related anti-social behaviour in Holme Wood.

"The Bradford South Neighbourhood Policing Team have responded very quickly to this particular incident and gathered evidence to prosecute which is great news.

"I have had assurances that the strict bail conditions will be monitored very closely.

"Despite all of this, there is little the police or indeed Bradford Council can do to limit the sale of fireworks.

"Until the Government steps in to better regulate the sale of fireworks, we all rely on retailers acting with a degree of responsibility when it comes to selling them."

Earlier this week, legislation to improve public safety by banning the supply of fireworks to under-18s came into force.

The Telegraph & Argus is inundated throughout each year with Bradfordians angered by hearing loud bangs late at night.

In August, Keighley MP Robbie Moore called on the Government to introduce "tougher regulations" to "restrict fireworks" that have been blighting the lives of residents across the city.

On the incident in Holme Wood, a spokesperson from the force said: "On Monday, three males were arrested for an arson offence that occurred on October 8 at Kelvin House in Holme Wood, whereby damage was caused by the use of fireworks inside the building.

"After working in conjunction with partners from the Holme Wood Community Safety Partnership Group local NPT officers have been able to identify the males responsible and gather enough evidence to prosecute them.

"The males have been released on bail with strict conditions.

"We welcome members of the community to share any information they have with us so we can continue to tackle this type of behaviour.

"Please feel free to contact us by emailing bradfordsouthnt@westyorkshire.police.uk

"Bradford South NPT are committed to tackling this type of ASB and will arrest/prosecute anyone found to be involved in such behaviour."
