THERE are more than 3,000 sex offenders in West Yorkshire and police do not know where some of them live.

Data from a Freedom of Information (FOI) Request sent into West Yorkshire Police showed there were 3,142 registered sex offenders in the county as of the start of this year.

There were a further 1,081 who are in custody, meaning the total stands at 4,223.

But the FOI shows that 10 of those sex offenders are wanted for breaching their registration requirements, in relation to them not providing police with an up-to-date address.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "West Yorkshire Police treat the management of Registered Sex Offenders (RSO’s) very seriously and work closely with partners to keep the West Yorkshire safe and feeling safe.

"Each district has a Public Protection Unit comprising specially trained officers dedicated to the management of RSO’s.

"Staff work to ensure offenders comply with registration requirements and associated orders, and to proactively mitigate the risk posed by offenders.

"In circumstances where an RSO fails to comply with registration requirements, such as failing to notify change of address, West Yorkshire Police actively work to trace the offender and bring them to justice."
