A MAN has been fined after failing to pay for a train fare between Leeds and Bradford.

Shahid Akram, 25, of Oxbridge Lane, Stockton-on-Tees, faced one charge of travelling on a railway without paying a fare.

He travelled between Leeds and Bradford Forster Square without paying the £4.90 fare.

During the journey, on April 12, 2022, he was asked by the conductor to produce a valid ticket, which he failed to do. Akram was also unable to pay for the journey he was making.

He was issued with an Unpaid Fares Notice in good faith so that he could pay the fare within 21 days.

Akram failed to make a payment within the time period. A reminder letter was sent to him requesting payment and a final reminder letter was then sent to him. He has not communicated and the fare remains unpaid. The offence was contrary to section 5(3)(a) of the Regulation of Railways Act 1889.

Akram was fined £440, ordered to pay £4.90 compensation, a £44 victim surcharge and £150 costs, which totalled £638.90. A collection order was made by the court at the sentencing hearing.

Akram was sentenced in his absence at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on September 14, 2022.
