A CHILD was injured in a two-car crash on the M62 this morning.

There were major delays on the motorway following the smash, with traffic held while the scene was cleared.

Vehicles were at a standstill and some drivers even resorted to using the hard shoulder to avoid the lengthy queues.

West Yorkshire Police said the force received a report of a collision on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway at around 8.50am.

A spokesperson said it was close to junction 25 and two vehicles were involved.

The child's minor head injury was treated at the scene.

National Highways hit out at people using the hard shoulder.

Sarah Watson-Quirk, National Highways Regional Safety Programme Manager, said: “Driving on the hard shoulder when it is not available for use is illegal and unsafe.

“There are only two legal uses for the hard shoulder – as a lane for emergency vehicles attending an incident and as a refuge for broken down vehicles.

"Using it at any other time, unless instructed to do so by traffic officers or roadworks signs, can land you with a £100 fine and three points on your licence. It is certainly never to be used to bypass traffic jams.”
