RESEARCH has revealed the UK’s unhealthiest areas, with Bradford being ranked in the top ten.

The city came 8th in a list dominated by the north of England.

It came after a new study by fitness experts BarBend analysed a recent release from the Office for National Statistics, which scored every local authority in England on a range of factors.

These included overall eating habits, fitness, alcohol misuse and smoking.

Bradford had a ‘healthy people score’ of 93.04, a ‘healthy lives score’ of 92.96 and a ‘healthy places score’ of 97.44. This gave the district an overall health score of 94.48.

Blackpool was ranked as the country’s unhealthiest area, based on its overall health score of 91.43.

It was followed by Manchester (which had an overall score of 92.53), Hull (93.09) and Birmingham (93.19).

Liverpool completed the top five, with Middlesbrough, Nottingham, Leicester and Barking and Dagenham also in the top ten.

The area’s low healthy lives score comes from poor scores like 80.24 for alcohol misuse and a poor score of 83.58 for healthy eating.

A spokesperson from BarBend said: “It’s interesting to see just how many factors go into the health index, and how poorly some areas score in them.

“When data for after the Covid-19 pandemic is prepared, it’s expected that many of these factors, particularly physical and mental health, will fluctuate due to the true unexpectedness of it.”

The Telegraph & Argus approached Bradford Council for comment, but the Council declined.
