BRADFORD Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe has been asked how the revenue generated by the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will be managed.

The Bradford CAZ went live on September 26, almost four years after Bradford Council was ordered to draw up a plan to improve air quality in the city.

In a written question ahead of Full Council on Tuesday, Councillor Matt Edwards (Greens, Tong) said: “Now that the Clean Air Zone has ‘gone live', will the Leader of Council share the current proposals for managing the revenue that will be generated and what mechanisms will be in place for councillors from all parties to contribute to how this revenue is spent?”

The CAZ sees the most polluting commercial vehicles charged to enter Bradford and sections of Shipley.

Back in 2018 Bradford Council was issued a ‘ministerial direction’ by Government to reduce illegal levels of pollution in areas of the district.

The CAZ has been praised by health bosses who described it as a “momentous step forward for public health” but it has also been met with anger.

Many small businesses have argued that the charges would place too great a burden on them – and they could not afford the extra cost.
