A BRADFORD doctor says he would support nurses if they choose to strike over pay.

Around 300,000 members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) are being asked if they want to mount a campaign of industrial action in the union’s first UK-wide ballot.

It is the first time in its 106-year history that the RCN has balloted members across the UK on strike action and it is urging them to vote in favour. The ballot opened on October 6 and closes on November 2.

Speaking on today’s Good Morning Britain, Dr Amir Khan said: “Any healthcare professional thinking about strike action will be extremely conflicted.

“It’s only right that they get fair pay. There are record numbers of people leaving the NHS. Huge shortage of nurses, 47,000 shortfall of nurses in England alone. That puts massive pressure on the system.

“A lot of nurses are going to foodbanks and hospitals are opening foodbanks within their organisations. That isn’t normal.

“If strike action is one way to try to stop that from happening, I think I would support it (strike action).

“I would prefer negotiations and fair pay for nurses and that’s where the government have to come in.”
