A 28-YEAR-old man who attacked a fellow drinker outside The Old Sun pub in Haworth will have to wait until Christmas to be sentenced.

Dean Sherratt was drinking outside the pub on May 21 earlier this year, when he launched himself at his victim in a seemingly unprovoked attack.

The man ended up with cuts on his nose and face and believed his injuries were as a result of Sherratt biting him.

The defendant, who appeared via videolink from HMP Leeds, admitted assault by beating last month, on the basis that he did not bite his victim, but punched him in the face.

But Bradford Crown Court heard today (Wednesday), that Sherratt, of Ravenstone Drive, Greetland, now claims he was subject to homophobic abuse from the other man – and that was the reason behind his actions.

In addition to the assault charge, Sherratt admitted breaching a suspended sentence order that was made in February this year.

Recorder Jonathan Sandiford KC ordered that a hearing take place to determine whether the attack was provoked or not, as this would have a bearing on sentencing for both offences.

The hearing is set to take place on December 22.
