THE cause of a sinkhole which opened up on a busy Bradford road is being investigated today (Wednesday).

A sinkhole opened on the Shipley Airedale Road near the junction of Leeds Road at Little Germany yesterday, causing traffic chaos in the area.

The right-hand lane on Shipley-Airedale Road going towards Shipley had to be shut and the closure has caused significant traffic disruption this morning and last night.

Yorkshire Water and Bradford Council's highways team will today investigate what caused the sinkhole.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “Our teams, along with Bradford Council highways team, will be attending Shipley Airedale Road today to continue investigations into the cause of the damage to the carriageway.

"Once identified, repairs will be undertaken and traffic management measures will be in place to allow this to be done safely.”

One driver said traffic was backed up Wakefield Road to the Asda store on Rooley Lane this morning.

Drivers also reported "traffic chaos" yesterday evening.

Bradford Council put out tweets yesterday advising motorists of "significant traffic disruption due to a sinkhole opening on the third lane opposite the Sikh Temple/Peckover Street".

They also advised drivers to avoid the area where possible until the problem is resolved".
