"Traffic management is currently on the scene, however we recommend that motorists avoid this area where possible until the problem is resolved. This is likely to be some time until all investigations are complete."

Bradford councillor Si Cunningham (Lab, Bolton and Undercliffe) also tweeted: "A large sinkhole has currently closed a lane of Shipley Airedale Road near Little Germany. BD1 Council Highways and Yorkshire Water are on the job, but significant disruption is expected. Avoid if possible and check official channels for updates."

A driver in Bradford city centre also spoke about "traffic chaos" on the roads in the area on Tuesday night.

"Traffic was very heavy tonight," said another Bradford driver. "Cars were backed up to Wakefield Road as the right-hand lane of Shipley Airedale Road was shut up to just after the Leeds Road junction at Little Germany."
