Three 'wellbeing' facilities could be created in an area of Bradford if a £20m bid for Levelling Up cash is approved.

The funding would lead to major changes to three community centres in the Bradford East area.

BE Healthy is the Bradford East bid to the Government’s Levelling Up fund – which allows Councils to apply for bids of up to £20m for each constituency in the country.

In August, it was revealed that the Bradford East bid would involve improvements to a number of community centres.

And a report that will be discussed by Bradford Council’s Executive today gives more detail of these plans.

For the Bradford East bid Bradford Council is asking Government from £19,989,165 of grant funding, and say the project will cost around £24,097,065.

The scheme would see a new purpose-built well-being facility created on the existing Karmand Community Centre site off Barkerend Road.

The Greenwood Centre in Swain House will be replaced with a new 'purpose-built well-being facility.'

And the Parkside community sports centre will be expanded to deliver a range of health and well-being activities.

This will include improved cricket facilities – a scheme that was granted planning permission last year.

The report says: “It will deliver three wellbeing hubs offering expanded and integrated access to health, sports and support services, enabling more residents to engage in active lifestyles and receive treatment earlier rather than later.

“BE Healthy offers the opportunity to test and implement a new approach to tackle health and deprivation challenges in deprived areas, one which favours sharing resources, local accessibility and better linkages between services.

“Together the projects present an opportunity to learn lessons about tackling complex deprivation challenges, improving social cohesion and well-being, and maximising social and economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups.

“In doing so, BE Healthy will tackle multiple determinants of health inequalities and social exclusion in deprived areas of Bradford East and improve health and economic outcomes.”

Last year, the Bradford West bid – for a new health and wellbeing centre at Squire Lane, was successful, meaning £20m will go to develop the derelict site.

Bids for the other four constituencies were submitted this summer.

The Keighley bid is for the development of several brownfield sites, improvements to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and the creation of new technology centres.

The Bradford South bid is for the complete transformation of the Odsal Stadium site.

And the Shipley Bid would be for the reopening of Bingley Pool and improvements to the town’s market square.

The Executive will hear about all four bids at a meeting in City Hall today.
