THE owners of a micropub are thrilled to have come through a tough field to win a prestigious seasonal award.

The Ainsbury, in Thackley, beat off stiff competition to be named Bradford CAMRA Pub of the Season for the summer.

Making the feat even more remarkable is John and Nicky Higgins only entered the industry less than a year ago.

Former teacher Nicky, who previously ran a nail technician business, said: "We're absolutely over the moon.

"I am gobsmacked because we have only been in the pub trade for less than a year. It was quite a big scoop for us.

"It has just given Thackley such a boost. There are some cracking pubs and restaurants around here. The village is a vibrant place to be."

John added: "We did not think we would have a chance against the more established and bigger pubs in the area so to come first is such a surprise. We are overjoyed."

The pair realised their dreams post-retirement when they spotted the unique unit, that needed no work, on the market.

“Nicky rang me at work and told me,” says John.

“She had already set up a meeting and had already decided to buy it - she knew I would be on board. It was perfect timing."

John retired from his job as a detective with West Yorkshire Police on October 31. “We bought the pub on November 1 and opened it on November 3 - it was like it was meant to be.”

It was a sign of things to come when The Ainsbury - named after the picturesque Ainsbury Avenue adjacent to the Thackley Road property - was selected as Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week back in May.

Nicky said: "We are quite a good double act me and John so we provide entertainment from behind the bar.

"We are both outgoing and friendly. Everybody is welcome in our pub."

John added: "Our pub is all about friendliest, conversation and community. When people come in, everybody gets a warm welcome. We always try to get to know our customers.

"We are always rotating our local beers, we never have a constant line on. We offer a good package.

"We attract a broad range of customers, young and old, who are all great people.

"It has been a really busy and successful pub. We are really proud of it."
