Arsonists destroyed a 25-foot canal jetty.
Fire crews from Brighouse and Elland were called to the blaze after the firebugs struck at about 10.30pm yesterday at the canal basin in Brighouse.
The flames took hold quickly because the walkway was coated in a bitumen-type material, which is flammable, a spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said.
It took the crews more than an hour to put out the fire but they prevented it from spreading to any buildings, the spokesman said.
Police are investigating the incident.
