A GP surgery needs to build two extensions to accommodate an expected surge in patient numbers, it has been revealed.

Hillfoot Surgery, on the Bradford/Leeds border, has submitted a planning application to expand.

According to the application, the patient list is on track to soar by next year, when another GP surgery in the area closes and the patients transfer to Hillfoot.

This means its patient list will increase from 4,000 people to 11,000.

The application says: “Hillfoot Surgery provides GP services to a growing patient list on the Leeds/Bradford border.

“Modifications and extensions have been made over recent years to facilitate growing patient numbers and the requirements of continually advancing medical practices.

“Two new extensions are proposed to provide an additional four clinical rooms and remodelling to relocate admin and staff areas within the roof space.”

It adds: “The practice patient list has increased by 10 per cent since 2020 and now has a list size of 7,000 patients. This is due to the increased housing built locally.”

The application adds a consultation is currently underway for the surgery to merge with Sunfield Medical Practice in Stanningley.

This is planned for March next year, when the GP partner at Sunfield retires and closes the practice, with a view to selling the premises.

The application adds: “This will result in those patients transferring to Hillfoot and the patient list size increasing by 4,000 patients up to 11,000 patients.

“Additional staff will be required which means additional space will need to be provided.

“Hillfoot Surgery is currently one of a network of 7 surgeries working across Calverley, Pudsey, Stanningley and Bramley.

“In addition to their existing workload, they pool resources to employ additional clinical staff to serve the needs of this local population.

“Hillfoot hosts several of these services on behalf of the network. This includes physiotherapists, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians.

“All of this requires clinical space which the extension will provide.

“Temporary accommodation was applied for in February 2020 within the parking area due to the need to provide additional workspace for practitioners within the Primary Care Network, and subsequently the pressures imposed by the Covid pandemic.

“The temporary accommodation will be replaced by the new extensions to the existing building which are needed due to growing patient numbers and the surgery’s role within the local Primary Care Network.”

People can submit comments on the application on the Leeds City Council planning portal until October 24.
