TEN people have been arrested in a police operation carried out in Holme Wood this week which is designed to make the area a better and safer place to live.

Police from Bradford South's Neighbourhood Policing Team joined up with officers from Bradford’s Precision Team, Operation Steerside, the Roads Policing Unit, Vehicle Operators Service agency, Taxi Licensing, Bradford Council, Youth Services and Environmental Enforcement in a week of action targeting a range of issues.

A community clean up took place in the Grayswood Drive, Kenton Way and Lymington Drive areas. Volunteers from Incommunities and Bradford Council with the support of local councillors made vast improvements to green spaces, snickets, and parking bays. Thirteen tonnes of rubbish was removed from the area.

Youth workers were focused on engaging with young people in the Staying Safe programme. Several outreach sessions were given to understand how young people felt about their safety as they return to school. Practical support was also offered in how to stay safe and be streetwise.

Inspector Andy Thornton of Bradford’s South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This operation highlights our continued commitment to making Holme Wood a better and safer place to live.

“Crime and anti-social behaviour in the area is a big concern for residents and we are working tirelessly with our partners to tackle the problem.

“The key to long-term change is that it involves the people of Holme Wood. As partners we strive to build relationships in the community, listen to ideas and involve residents in future work.

“Information is key from the community and this action highlights the ongoing work in the community to get these people causing these issues off the streets.

“Throughout this week we have made significant arrests, disrupting criminals at work and we will continue to make arrests.

“We still need the community to come forward with information. We treat all information given in the strictest confidence; we can provide safeguarding to any witnesses.

“This week of action doesn’t stop here; we will continue to be proactively out in Holme Wood. I hope this sends a strong message to people involved in crime and anti-social behaviour, it will not be tolerated and we will find the people responsible.”

Cllr Abdul Jabar, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: “This has been a great opportunity to work with our partners and the community to make Holme Wood a better and safer place to live.

“Youth workers focused on engaging young people in our Staying Safe programme. They used a series of outreach sessions to understand how young people felt about their safety as they return to school.

Practical support was also offered on how to stay safe and be streetwise. Youth workers will continue this work as we move towards darker evenings.

“We know fly tipping is an issue throughout Holme Wood and all agencies working in the area will continue to work together to take enforcement action against the perpetrators of fly-tipping whilst working with residents to make positive environmental improvements to their gardens and the wider neighbourhood.

“If anyone sees fly-tipping taking place, please note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers and inform the council.”
